There are plenty of diet plans that promise fast weight loss, but many of them are also unhealthy — if not downright dangerous. Are there any healthy, safe ways to lose weight fast? Absolutely!

By “fast” I don’t mean you’ll drop 20 pounds in a week or anything; that’s excessive. But what if you could make a few small changes to your habits and easily and steadily lose weight and reach your goal in the next 2-3 months? (The length of time it takes depends on how much weight you need to lose, but for most people a few months would be reasonable.)

- Drink plenty of water.

Yes, you’ve probably heard it a thousand times, but the simple fact is, it works! Drinking a minimum of 64 ounces of water daily does many wonderful things for your body. First, it helps your body to release any retained water it’s been holding onto to avoid severe dehydration. Within the first few of days of drinking more water, you should easily lose a few pounds just in water weight! Second, being fully hydrated allows all of your organs, muscles, and cells to function properly, which not only helps you lose weight but feel fantastic while you do. Third, drinking plenty of water keeps you feeling fuller even if you aren’t eating as much as you usually do. There are still more benefits, but those are some big ones.

- Listen to hunger cues.

Do you ever eat when you aren’t really hungry? Sometimes you just feel like “grazing” or “picking” at food throughout the day, but doing this can really boost your calorie intake beyond where it should be. A better idea is to eat only when you feel physically hungry – not bored, not restless, not because everyone else is eating. You can tell when you’re physically hungry when your stomach feels hollow and empty, and it growls and makes noise. Other signs that your body needs fuel are feeling slightly weak, irritable, or shaky.

- Reduce portion sizes.

Most of the time we eat far more than our bodies need at one sitting. Even after we’re full we keep eating because the food tastes good, or we think we have to finish everything on our plates, or we want to get our money’s worth (at restaurants), or we don’t want to be rude (at the homes of other people). But we don’t serve our bodies with this practice – we are only hurting ourselves.

Start immediately paying attention to how much food your body is really asking for. Eat slowly and then stop when you notice that little signal your stomach sends to your brain that says, “That’s enough for now.” Sometimes that little signal can be subtle, but you’ll recognize it if you pay attention.
