Get Your Kids Away From The TV And Start Moving!

If you take a good look at kids today, you can see a very disturbing trend. Childhood obesity is becoming a huge problem in many countries, with a lot of children actually being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. This used to be a disease that was only seen in older, overweight adults. It’s our responsibility as parents to watch our children’s weight, and encourage them to maintain a healthy body weight. It’s important to encourage them to exercise often, to not only help them lose the weight, but to be healthier overall as well.
Follow these tips to get your child up and exercising:
- Get them signed up in group sports. Group sports provide a great workout while teaching teamwork and social skills. And it doesn’t seem like exercise, because most kids think that sports are fun anyway. Try finding a sport that your child really enjoys so that they’ll want to be practicing and playing often — and getting a great deal of exercise at the same time. Sports that promote aerobic activity are best, but as long as they enjoy the sport, they’ll be getting much needed exercise.
- Don’t rely on sports if your child doesn’t enjoy them. There are kids who just do not enjoy any sports, and if this is the case with your child, you need to find some other options. Don’t push them to do a sport that they won’t enjoy, because they won’t feel inclined to play and get the exercise they need. Try a fitness center that offers classes for children like martial arts, swimming, dance and even yoga.
- Work out with them. Children will learn what they see. So, that means if you’re sitting around all day without exercising, while teaching them how important exercise is, they aren’t going to be ready to listen to what you’re saying. You can set a good example for your child and give them something to aspire to. Find something that you enjoy doing together, and you can spend some quality time, while getting the needed exercise.
- Let them have fun. Kids won’t enjoy a workout routine that you desire, such as a quiet run on a treadmill. Children need to be stimulated, so make up games, play sports or go dance around the house! Be creative, and have fun. Your child will look more forward to exercising if they are able to have at least a bit of fun.
- Cut down on TV and video game time. This is one problem that’s best if it’s stopped before it becomes too much of an issue. If you’ve always let your kids sit in front of the TV for hours on end, then try to cut back on the time that’s allowed, they are not going to be very accommodating. Limit the times for these activities from a young age, before it becomes a pattern. If you’re having a really difficult time getting your kids to give up video games, find ones that require physical activity, like ones on the new Nintendo Wii, or Dance Revolution. This can be a compromise that will make you both happy.
- Fit activity in whenever you can. The schedules of children today are just as busy as the adult’s. You don’t need a large amount of time penciled in to your schedule to allow your kids to exercise. Squeeze in any small activities you can, whenever there’s some free time.
There are many ways to get your kids active, and exercising. It’s so important to help them when they are young, to develop habits which are healthy and that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives. Once it becomes a way of life, they’ll no longer need to worry about not getting the exercise they need, and they’ll become part of a healthier generation.
