Food Myths: What is the Truth and Nothing But the Truth?

Posted in: Nutrition, Weight Loss

Throughout the centuries, people have accepted certain things to be absolute, undeniable truth, when in fact, many times those “truths” are simply myths or misperception.

For example, “eating sugar makes you fat”. Is this always true 100% of the time? Does everyone who eats sugar get fat? Of course not. Here’s another one: “milk helps you lose weight”. Not everyone who drinks milk loses weight, right? Likewise with “eating pasta makes you fat” and there are endless others.

The thing with all of these myths is that they may indeed be true for SOME people, in SOME cases. The better question to ask yourself when considering myths and/or truths like these is: Does this apply to ME?

Rather than blindly believing that eating sugar or carbs makes you fat, ask yourself how your body reacts to sugar and other carbohydrates. Do you feel sluggish and bloated after eating them? Do you feel a drop in energy afterward? If so, then you may make the wise decision to limit them and indulge only occasionally.

While there are definitely some overall “truths” about eating (like fruit and vegetables are good for you, limiting saturated fats is a good idea, and others) most of the information that are being touted as absolute fact are anything but.

Why is this important to know?

The reason it’s so important to closely examine these myths and truths for yourself is because you can alleviate a whole lot of frustration by not blindly believing everything you hear. Getting such conflicting information from so many sources only leads to frustration and confusion.

Instead, focus on what matters. How does YOUR body react to various foods? What have you learned works best for you? Paying attention to these things will help you avoid being led astray by false assumptions, myths and fads.
