2 Things You Must Do to Reach Your Goals

When making a healthy change, it’s important to not only create a plan of success but also to create a time to step back and review and re-evaluate where you are. Taking a few moments to review your progress and assess your setbacks will not only help you where to go from here, but also how to be more successful next month.

What to look for

When reviewing your past month it is important to take a look at several factors. What did you do really well? What worked in your plan? What didn’t work in your plan? Maybe you decided to run three times a week but it is January and the weather isn’t co-operating. Looking back on the month you may find that you didn’t work out as often as you planned. Now you can look to the future and plan. For example, you can obtain weather-appropriate running gear, invest in a treadmill or get a gym membership.

When you had setbacks, what caused them?

Maybe stress triggered a setback, or maybe skipping breakfast made your later day mealtime decisions the wrong ones for your goal. When you had successful days, what was the difference? Did you achieve your goal? Why or why not? What were the contributing factors? If you did, what were the steps that helped you succeed?

What rewards motivated you?

Is your support system working? Is your plan to succeed working, or is it too easy or too hard? If you established a goal of running a marathon, maybe you bit off a bit more than you could chew and your goal of running 15 miles by the end of your first month of training was too much with your current work schedule. Maybe 15 miles was too easy and you’ve found that you’re not feeling motivated. Now is the time to reassess your goals and create a plan that will take you into the next month, and get you one step closer to reaching lifelong health changes and success.

What’s next?

Reviewing your goal gives you the power to set new goals and to succeed. Now you know what works and what doesn’t. If you know how to motivate yourself, how to talk yourself through setbacks and how to analyze your successes and setbacks, you’re well armed and educated to handle any goals you set for yourself in the future.

As you review your month, take notes on what you’d like to accomplish in your future. What skills and knowledge do you now have that will help you succeed? What goals are on your list to accomplish next?
