Children’s Goals - Helping Them to Succeed

Your child is the most important thing in your life. Wanting them to succeed is only natural! It can be hard to watch them struggle to meet their goals. You almost want to do everything for them. But you shouldn’t. The best option is for you to give them the tools they need to succeed.
This can be a difficult step if you’ve never sat down and made a plan for the goals you have in your life. Try to set an example for them by making some of your goals known and the steps you’re taking to achieve those goals. Many children learn by example, so this is a great way to show them how it’s done.
Another thing you can do to help them meet their goals is to sit down and talk with them. Talk about what their goals are in life. Remember, this doesn’t mean that you’re supposed to dictate these goals for them! Make sure they are the ones doing the talking at this stage. Children are different and trying to turn them into a miniature version of you might not be the best thing for them.
When they tell you their list of goals, just sit and listen at first. When they’re finished, you can start to guide them in the right direction. There are some goals that will not be attainable at this point in their lives, so you’ll have to be the one to help them see that.
Keep in mind that even if you think there is no way they’ll meet certain goals, that it’s not up to you in some cases. Even if it’s not something you would have chosen, let them have their dreams! Think back to when you were a child. You probably had a million different goals that you never met. Still, having those dreams helped to shape the person you are today.
Now that you and your child have a clear grasp on these goals and they feel better for getting them out, you can come up with a plan together. Talk about the goals they should focus on for now and the goals that are better kept for a later date. Some of these goals should be in the short term so that they can start seeing immediate results.
One example might be if they want to get an A on a research report that’s due in school. Go over the teacher’s instructions with them to pull out the key things they need to do in order to succeed. Help your child to make a list of the steps they can take. As they do each of these steps they can check them off and feel a great sense of accomplishment!
Even when you’re focusing on more long term goals you can still help them to figure out the smaller steps they need to take. This always makes things much more manageable in the long run. Each accomplishment will seem like a great thing because they’re getting things done.
Showing your children how to reach their goals is one of the best gifts you can give them. First, lead by example. Then you can help them break down their goals into steps they can achieve.
