Taking Action for New Year’s

Posted in: Goals, New Year's, Self-Improvement    |    Be the first to comment!

As the New Year approaches you might be thinking about making some New Year’s resolutions. Everyone has certain areas that they want to change in their lives, so don’t feel like you’re an odd duck if you do, too. In fact, you’ll be one of the few to actually follow through with your plans!

That’s right. New Year’s is a time where everyone wants to make their life better, but hardly anyone actually does. There’s something about starting a brand new year that makes you sit up and take notice. The problem is that hardly anyone sticks around with their goals long enough for it to make a difference. Are you going to let this happen to you?

Make it your mission to make this year different. There’s no use letting life pass you by without improving on everything you can. What New Year’s resolutions do you need to make?

If you’re going to follow through with these goals you need a foolproof plan. This doesn’t mean that you simply write your resolutions down and hope for the best. You need a list of goals that are clear and actionable.

Before you write down your goals you might want to consider what you actually want out of your life. What are the things you simply cannot live with anymore? Some examples are being in debt or being overweight.

After you think of the goals you have, you can then consider why you have these goals. You want to be out of debt so you’re financially free. You want to lose weight to be healthier and look your best. Thinking about why you have certain goals can move you even closer to achieving them.

When you’re done finalizing your goals, come up with your clear, actionable steps. Don’t worry if they seem too silly to write down — every little bit helps! Even something as small as “eat an apple each day” gives you something attainable.

The reason for doing this is because each and every goal you reach makes you feel better about yourself. Having something to “check off” can give you the burst of energy and mind power you need to keep going.

That’s why most people fail at their New Years Resolutions. Something like “lose weight” is too general to put into action. The task seems far too massive to take on. The best thing you can do for yourself is to break that down into smaller pieces so that it’s easier for you to handle.

When you do achieve these smaller pieces of your goal, make sure you reward yourself as much as you can. If you avoid sweets for a week, reward yourself by picking up the latest and greatest novel. If you pay down some of your debt, reward yourself by relaxing guilt-free. Do whatever you can to train your mind to see that following through with your goals is the best way to feel better and live better.

New Year’s resolutions are made and broken all the time. Make it your mission to follow through with your resolutions this year. Break everything down into actionable chunks and allow yourself time for celebrations – and rewards!
